Here are 10 of our favorite rules to help you take what’s in your head, put it on the page, and get it to the market:
- Find the time and space you need – write in the corners if you have to.
- Be organized – time management will make or break you.
- Stop sharpening your pencils – quit that stalling and get writing!
- Make realistic deadlines and keep them – this is where belonging to a critique group is a real help.
- Self-edit – learn to read your own work as objectively as possible.
- Read! Read! Read! – anything, even the back of the cereal box!
- Read the trades. They might not make sense at first, but over time you will garner a better understanding of how the market works.
- Be professional – keep records and receipts, be aware of legalities, prepare for self-employed income.
- Connect with other writers
- Reward yourself – go for a walk, have a latte, go to a movie, read a book, keep balance in your life.
Remember SMART goals: Specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely
